The walk
Expedition Bulskampveld – Nieuwenhove is mainly intended for families with children aged roughly 4 to 12. Along the route, wooden play features invite them to climb, explore and learn more about life during the Bronze Age.
The route is almost entirely unpaved and stays beneath the trees for most of the walk. It also works well as a short woodland walk without children.
Route map
Through Nieuwenhove Wood
The walk starts at the junction of Waterstraat and Hogendaledreef in Nieuwenhove. Wooden posts marked with a Bronze Age bull show the way through the forest.
Several wooden structures along the route refer to life during the Bronze Age. These include a Bronze Age dwelling, a cooking area and circular play features inspired by burial mounds from that period. Children can play freely while discovering a little more about the past.
Mostly unpaved forest paths
At 3.2 kilometres, the walk remains easy to manage. It follows almost entirely unpaved paths and spends most of the route beneath the trees.
Without children, the loop offers a short introduction to Nieuwenhove Wood. The play features are spread along the route and fit naturally into the woodland surroundings.
The E40 in the background
Traffic from the nearby E40 can be heard along some parts of the route. During my walk, I did not find it particularly disturbing. The forest paths and greenery still shaped my overall impression of the walk.
At the end of the loop, the route leads back through the forest to the starting point near Waterstraat. If you would like to walk farther, you can continue along some of the other paths through Nieuwenhove Wood.

Jay’s tips
Allow some extra time at the different play features. The short distance means children can stop and play without making the walk too long.
Good to know
Picnic area or benches
Playground
The route is mainly aimed at children aged roughly 4 to 12. As almost the entire walk is unpaved, choose footwear suited to the weather and the condition of the forest paths.
My experience
I walked this route without children and enjoyed it as a way to discover Nieuwenhove Wood. The E40 was audible at times, but it did not really bother me.
During the walk, a roe deer suddenly crossed the path. I was too late to take a photograph, but the encounter became the moment I remembered most clearly afterwards.
Waymarking
From the starting point, follow the wooden posts marked with the little Bronze Age bull.
