The walk
Grand-Fort-Philippe Pier is not a conventional hiking route, but a short walk towards the sea. The route follows the mouth of the Aa to the end of the harbour channel before returning along the same path.
The walk is approximately 2.8 kilometres long and follows a mainly flat, paved surface.
Route map
Along the mouth of the Aa
Grand-Fort-Philippe lies at the mouth of the Aa, where the river reaches the North Sea. From the coast, the walk follows the harbour channel towards the end of the pier.
Petit-Fort-Philippe lies across the water. The farther you walk, the more the buildings fall away behind you and the wider the view becomes. It is approximately 1.4 kilometres from the coast to the end of the pier.
Walking to the end of the pier
At the end, there are open views across the mouth of the Aa, the harbour channel and the North Sea. There is no long series of sights along the way. This walk is mainly about the water, the wind and the open coastal landscape.
You then return to the parking area along exactly the same route, bringing the total distance to approximately 2.8
The Calvaire des Marins
The Calvaire des Marins stands close to the beginning of the walk. The present monument was inaugurated in 1947 and remains closely connected with the maritime and religious history of Grand-Fort-Philippe.
Standing beside the harbour channel, it still plays a role in the annual commemoration of sailors lost at sea and the blessing of the sea. It makes a short but meaningful stop before or after the walk.

Jay’s tips
Combine the pier with another nearby site, such as Parc de l’Estran or Gravelines. This makes the walk a worthwhile additional stop during a longer trip.
Good to know
Little shade
Monument
There is very little shelter on the pier. In strong winds, it can feel noticeably colder than it does farther inland. An extra layer of clothing can therefore be useful, even on a sunny day.
My experience
I would not travel to Grand-Fort-Philippe to spend half a day on this walk alone. The route is short, and you return along the same path.
If I were already in the area, however, I would still walk out to the end of the pier. The farther you go towards the sea, the more the buildings disappear behind you and the wider the view becomes. That open horizon was what I enjoyed most.
